What is Tech Abuse?

Technology is a significant part of our everyday lives.

Tech allows us to do so many things – be creative, stay connected and work more efficiently.

When technology is used for harmful purposes, such as monitoring, tracking, harassment, or intimidation, it can contribute to family, domestic and sexual violence in the form of tech-based coercive control.

Coercive control in Victoria

Although coercive control is recognised under Victoria’s Family Violence Protection Act 2008, there is currently no standalone offence. Courts do take coercive control into account when issuing intervention orders, and the Victorian Law Reform Commission is reviewing whether it should be criminalised.
